FAQ for Jasper Dental Associates
Who is the best dentist for you? When searching for a new dentist the best recommendation is always one made by asking a family member or friend. This will help in giving you a little bit of background on what type of office it is, and whether or not other people are happy with this office. If you are new to an area and do not have a friend who can recommend someone for you, then go to your phone book and make a list of the dentists in your area.
You can either call or visit these offices to find out such things as: How do they answer their telephone? What are the office hours? Are they convenient to your schedule? Will they work with your insurance plan if this is important to you? Do they treat children if you have any? Are they available in case of an emergency? Does the dental staff make you feel comfortable? Are they courteous and helpful? Are the answers to your questions direct or evasive? Paying a visit to the office will help you to assess the atmosphere of the office and help you decide whether or not you would be comfortable there
Your visit to the dentist should be pleasant and comfortable. You need to feel relaxed with your dental team in order to ensure that you can work together in maintaining a healthy happy smile. Take the time to ask around for a dental office that can meet your needs.
How often should I go to my Dentist for a Check-up? Some people tend to have a rather strange attitude towards checkups. If the dentist does not find something wrong, their time has been wasted. As a matter of fact, a series of successful visits can discourage them from ever seeing their dentist and hygienist again. The idea that you should only see the dentist when something is wrong is not only ridiculous but can end up costing you a lot of money, comfort and time.
Your dentist is trained to detect and treat many problems before you are even aware of them. The goal is prevention – prevent disease, decay and tooth loss. Your dentist can help you but only if you make the appointment. It all comes back to teamwork. Only you, your dentist and your hygienist can determine how often to make a visit, but most for most people, twice a year is sufficient. Checkups should not be a one-time event. They are necessary for regular assessments of the condition and the wellbeing of your mouth. Check-up procedures vary with each dentist, but basically will contain: a review of dental and medical history, an overall examination of the mouth including oral cancer screening, a professional cleaning, possibly a fluoride treatment, and a general assessment of hygiene at home. Regular checkups are a MUST in the fight against gum disease.
How do I keep my teeth? Your second set of teeth is your last, proper care will ensure that you keep them for life. In spite of what you may have heard dental disease is not only controllable, it is also correctable and most of all preventable. A thorough brushing and flossing routine is important for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Flossing is important because it reaches the areas a toothbrush can’t reach, between the teeth and under the gum line. Your teeth need proper nutrition just as your body does. Fresh fruit and vegetables are a sure bet for healthy teeth and gums. Natural sugars however act the same way on teeth as refined sugars, so be sure to brush or at least rinse with water if a toothbrush is not handy after eating even a piece of fruit. It is important that you find a dental team that you feel comfortable with and who you can work with in order to maintain a healthy smile for life. Routine visits to your dentist for a checkup and cleaning will help to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Do I really need X-rays? Dental x-rays are taken routinely by your dentist. There are many diseases and dental defects, which cannot be seen by the naked eye, especially where teeth are concerned. These may include such things as decay under old fillings, teeth trapped below the gums, cavities between the teeth, bone loss as a result of gum disease and changes in either jaw bone structure which can be affected by many systemic diseases.
If you are a new patient, your dentist may recommend x-rays to check the current status of your mouth and to check for hidden problems. Upon your first visit to the dentist he or she will usually take those x-rays that will be necessary to comprehensively assess your oral health. A full series of x-rays usually consists of 14 – 18 films. A Panoramic x-ray film showing a much greater areas of your jaw bones may be needed as well in order for your dentist to comfortably and competently examine you. Every six months or so your dentist may take a small series of x-rays consisting of four to six films. A six-month period is a long time in the life of a cavity and it is for this reason that a visit to the dentist every six months is so important.
Is it safe to have X-rays taken? Yes. Numerous precautions and advances in x-ray equipment help protect patients from receiving unnecessary radiation. The amount of radiation received from a dental x-ray exam is extremely small compared to other naturally occurring sources of radiation, including minerals in the soil, radon and cosmic radiation from outer space. Unlike their medical counterparts dental x-rays are very low in radiation. A full-mouth series of films, using state-of-the-art digital technology, will deliver an effective dose that is equivalent to about 19 days of exposure to naturally occurring environmental radiation. The reason for this is that the amount of radiation needed to expose a film as small as a dental x-ray is very small. Also the areas in your mouth that are being x-rayed are far less dense than other areas of your body and therefore require very little radiation in order to pick up the image. Also the beam of radiation is a very small narrow one and literally passes through the cheek and out of your body. The rest of your body is also shielded from any stray particles with a lead apron or shield.
With the advances in computer aided dentistry, dentists can now provide patients the latest in diagnostic imaging. Digital means a fraction of the traditional x-ray exposure yet provides greater image resolution and clarity. The results include more exact diagnosis, greater confidence in treatment and patient/staff protection.
X-rays are an extremely useful and important diagnostic tool and can aid in preventing many major problems. The importance of routine thorough examinations by your dental team will do much to avoid major problems. Dental X-rays may reveal: the number, size, and position of teeth; unerupted or impacted teeth; the presence and extent of dental caries; bone damage (such as from periodontitis); abscessed teeth; fractured jaw; gingivitis; impacted tooth; malocclusion of teeth; or other abnormalities of the teeth and jaw bones.
I am afraid of going to the dentist … what can I do? Fear of the dentist is quite common and many people are as fearful and concerned as you may be. However, because fear of the dentist is so common, your dentist and his/her staff are also well aware of this and are properly trained to work with you in helping you to overcome these fears.
Notify your dental team about your concerns and questions. You will find they are eager to work with you to make your visits pleasant. Asking questions about your mouth and proposed treatment will help to remove fear of the unknown and give you an opportunity to become involved in your dental health. Most importantly, remember that your dental team is eager to work with you, not just on you, in order to achieve a mutual goal – maintaining the health of your smile.
What is gum disease? Gum disease or periodontal disease or gingivitis as it is also called is the number one cause of tooth loss today. The reason you lose teeth from gum disease is because this disease attacks the gums as well as the bone, which are the foundation in which your teeth rest. As the bone literally dissolves away from around your teeth, your teeth become loose and eventually fall out. Anyone at any age is susceptible to gum disease. Gum disease is caused by plaque. If the plague is not removed on a daily basis it will form calculus, which is the breeding ground for the germs which cause periodontal disease.
Bleeding gums are the first sign that there may be a problem with the gums. Puffy, tender red gums are also a sign that there is an infection present. Bleeding gums however are not always present even in severe cases of gum disease. Routine and regular visits to your dentist are the best way of catching gum disease in its early stages before too much damage has been caused. Gum disease will not go away by itself or with improved home care. The only way of removing plaque deep under the gums is with professional cleanings. Once you have had a gum problem you will always be susceptible to recurring problems, so be sure to see your dentist on a regular basis – every two to three months, unless he or she recommends otherwise.
How does a tooth decay? A substance known as plaque causes tooth decay. Plaque is a clear bacteria laden film, which develops on the teeth. The bacteria in plaque interact with the starches and sugars we eat and form an acid, which breaks down or de-mineralizes our teeth. As this process is going, on our saliva along with properties it has, acts to help re-mineralize teeth. When the demineralization process is faster than that of remineralization a cavity occurs.
There are several things that can be done to slow down or totally prevent this breakdown process which leads to cavities. One of the most important contributors to decay are sugars, and eliminating or drastically reducing your intake of them will help greatly in preventing tooth decay. Proper brushing and flossing, and removal of the plaque will also help in preventing breakdown. Home fluoride rinses help aid in the remineralization process. Of course routine visits to your dentist are of importance not only in the early detection of cavities but professional cleanings and fluoride treatments are very important in maintaining a healthy happy mouth.
How do we prevent tooth decay & what are sealants? There are several things that you can do to help prevent tooth decay. The most important of course is the diet. What you eat plays a very important role in the overall wellbeing of your mouth and the rest of your body. Since sugars are directly related to the breakdown process, which causes decay, eliminating sugar from the diet will have a direct impact on cavities.
Plaque and sugar interact with one another to form an acid, which breaks down the enamel of the teeth, resulting in a cavity. Proper removal of plaque will also greatly reduce the risk of getting cavities. Thorough brushing and flossing will not only remove sugar from the mouth but also the plaque, which has formed on the surfaces of the teeth since the last brushing. Certain foods will help to keep the mouth in a healthy state. These foods include whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and any low sugar foods that won’t aid in tooth decay.
Sealants are a very good way of protecting the biting surfaces of teeth that have never had a filling nor have no decay. Sealants are a clear or white material, which is applied on the biting surfaces of the teeth. The purpose of sealants is to smooth over the normal crevices of the teeth were germs could easily accumulate, thereby protecting the teeth from decay.

- I was having trouble finding a place open during these tough times and the good Lord led me to this group of amazing people. Due to poor tooth care on my part over the years I recently starting having pain in a tooth that was rather intense. I have dealt with a bad tooth for a while now and it reached a head so to speak this past week. Unfortunately it grew infected and needed to be addressed ASAP. I called and spoke with a very pleasant woman who got me in the next day. They were quick and curious and treated me with urgency. Focused on only the too I needed to adress(I dont have great teeth) set me up for a root canal immediately and proceeded with care. Unlike other experiences I did not feel ANY judgement for my current predicament nor was anything said or done to make me feel shame. Sadly I could not get numbed enough for the root canal but was prescribed meds and rescheduled promptly! I felt looked after and safe in their hands during a time of vulnerability and duress. They are a god send I look forward to coming back to finish the procedure and am very excited to work with this wonderful group of individuals to address my other issues. My wife will become a patient very soon, and my daughter as well(when she gets teeth). I would recommend Jasper Dental to any and everyone. Thank you ladies, for all you are doing!- Chris McNair. 2/19/2020

My husband does not like going to the dentist.. but he came home very pleased and very happy on how amazing the Dr and office was with getting him in and the treatment! - I was hesitant when looking for a new dentist after being with one where I lived for my whole life , had been recommended to JDA and saw good reviews. I had an exceptional experience today. The girl with short dark hair who took my x-rays was kind and answered all my questions. Melissa was my hygienist and she did a great job. I am picky about cleaning and have sensitive teeth and she really did a good job with my cleaning. The young doctor (dentist) answered all my questions, and approached my dental needs. The receptionists were thorough, reassuring, and honest about services, prices, and things of the nature. Overall a professional but laidback experience and will look forward to using their services again. Very timely as well.- rachel kolker. 5/21/2019

- We have been searching for a new Dentist. My wife tried another in the area and was disappointed. We read good reviews about JDA. I was the first in the family to try them. I was impressed with the cleanliness and modern decor. The equipment appeared to be some of the newest technology. The staff was young, competent and appeared to enjoy their work. They provided information and a high level of service. I was not pushed to buy “extras”. Their pricing was reasonable and they worked with my insurance. Good first experience and I will be sending the next family member soon.- Scott Burchett. 9/18/2018

From the receptionist to the X-ray tech, the dentist (who was very patient making sure I was numb and comfortable) to the person who did the final paperwork everyone was very polite and considerate.- Trent Poole. 8/20/2018
- I have had a number of crowns by dentists in the past. Difficult, gaging impressions, gentil use of the temporary crown, and several trips to the office was the norm. JDA has adopted a one visit crown process. There are no impressions, no temporary crown, and all done in one visit. Great staff, quality care, and nice facility.- Harley Rakestraw. 8/3/2018

- All I can say was this was the best and worst day in my dental life. I went into this appointment dreading what was going to happen. I was getting two crowns and a filling. I could not have been more apprehensive. The staff picked up on my anxiety right away. They went WAY over the top to calm my fears, ease my pain, and at one point even wipe my tear. They held my hand and talked me through all three hours in the chair. By the end of my experience not only did I feel proud of myself for getting through it lol, but I felt befriended, cared for, and like I was as important as any member of the staffs family. THANKS SO MUCH JASPER DENTAL ASSOCIATES. I WILL RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!- babcock030108 . 4/3/2018
- I want to thank you for a job well done! I was amazed that you all could give me 2 crowns today on very short notice. Two days. My dental technician was excellent, she made me feel comfortable and pain free the whole time. What a professional! Doctor was excellent too! I'm so glad it's done and no need for multiple visits. 😃Thanks, Michael.- Michael Lane. 3/24/2018
- After a horrifying experience at another dentist while having teeth extracted and implants placed, I went looking for someone to complete my treatment since I wasn't ever going to set foot in the other place again. That is when I found Jasper Dental and Dr. Sylvia Atkinson. She took time to listen to me and her, as well as her staff, did everything they could, to help me. She set me up with another surgeon, called and checked on me, and after having 4 of my original implants fail, she worked with me to get a temporary solution to fix my upper arch, until I felt like continuing with implants. She is very professional, helpful, and sincere. I am very thankful I found Dr. Atkinson and her staff.- Becky Landress. 2/12/2018
- They were able to fit me in as a same day new patient with a very painful tooth and I hadn't been to the dentist in about 5 years...! They NEVER made me feel like I was less than someone who already had an appointment and there was no unusual wait for me!! Dr. Frisbee and his associate (the pregnant one :) had so much compassion for me and made me feel so comfortable in a very vulnerable moment. I havent quit thinking about the care I got from them, so I had to make sure I wrote a review right away so the way they made me feel doesnt go unappreciated! Thank God for good people like them!- Candace Robinson. 2/8/2018
- Long story short, I am a grown man who is terrified of the dentist. Because of this, before my visit it had been over 10 years since I had seen a dentist. Over the past few weeks I have been in a lot of pain and it got to the point where I had to make the call to get some relief. Jasper Dental, although booked, fit me in the next morning with Dr. Evan Frisbee. I had cracked teeth, broken fillings, and two wisdom teeth needing extraction to provide some context of what was performed. Dr Frisbee and the staff around him did absolutely everything to make the experience as tolerable as possible from the moment I walked in. I cant thank the folks at Jasper Dental enough.- Jeff Ouellette. 0/31/2018
- To someone who has never had an enjoyable visit to a dentist, what a Wonderful Dental Experience! I can tell you, Dr. Evan Frisbee will be my Permanent dentist going forward. He is kind, friendly, knowledgeable, and professional, and, he gave me all the necessary time and attention necessary to explain my options following a thorough exam. It was so refreshing not to be hurried in a doctor/dentist office. In addition to Dr. Frisbee, his dental assistants and office staff were Outstanding! From the moment I walked in, to when I left, I felt welcomed and confident I was in good hands. Also, kudos to Peter, the hygienist, who did the cleaning of my teeth. Again, friendly, professional and thorough. It is not normally my policy to make recommendations regarding doctors or dentists, but in this case, I'll happily make an exception. I can't say enough good things about my experience at Jasper Dental Associates. I would recommend Dr. Frisbee and his staff to anyone. Mike W.- Michael Weicks. 11/14/2017

- I have always dreaded going to a dentist. After relocating to Ellijay a friend recommended Jasper Dental Associates and I tried it as it's one of the few places in the area that accepts Aetna. Have been several times over the past year and each visit has been great. All of the staff, from the dentist to the hygienists, and the clerical staff, have been professional, prompt and cheerful. - I just wanted so give a big thanks to Dr.Riley. I got a root canal/crown done about a year ago, and was having a bit of discomfort from it. She had me come in, and she took care of it at $00000 cost to me. She done a complete new crown!!! She definitely stands behind her work 100%%. And I will continue to use her and recommend JASPER DENTAL ASSOCIATES to anyone looking for a great dentist. Thanks again!!- Ronnie Wright. 5/29/2015
- I have had excellent service and results at Jasper Dental Associates. I had been suffering with sharp pains for several years during my teeth cleaning visits due to a poorly designed bridge that I had received at another Dentist. Dr. Riley recognized the problem and built a new bridge that fit correctly. We waited until my insurance would allow the procedure. I had my first cleaning since getting the new bridge and had no pain!! I've also had my teeth cleaned by all 3 hygienists and they are extremely experienced, professional and friendly. I would definitely recommend Jasper Dental Associates.- Doug Johnson. 5/24/2015
- Jasper Dental has been my dentist's office for a couple years, and we love them! The entire staff is friendly and incredibly helpful. My young boys love going to get their teeth cleaned, and the hygiene staff make it fun and easy. My husband had not been to the dentist in 10 years, and had a terrible phobia about going, but was pleasantly surprised. After his initial exam and consult about the work that needed to be done, he went back over the period of a couple weeks to complete his cleanings and fillings. We were blown away that our final cost was over $200 cheaper than the original quote. Not once did they hesitate to let us know that they were doing less work than they thought originally needed, and they adjusted their prices accordingly, and worked to save us as much money as possible. I've never been to a medical office of any kind that works to be as honest and tries to save you money like Jasper Dental Associates. For me personally, I have cultivated a wonderful relationship with the staff at this office. I have walked around my whole life HATING my smile, but there is always something that would take priority over getting cosmetic braces, especially with my two kids. There are Under Armour socks, football cleats and baseball gloves that always take precedence. I talked to Dr. Riley about wanting to have some Orthodontic work done, but explaining to her my finances. Unfortunately, even with great dental insurance, cosmetic braces are just not covered under our plan. She smiled, and told me not to worry, they would help me make it happen! I sat down with their office manager, Susan, and we came up with a payment plan that would work for me and my family. I cannot begin to express the gratitude I have for Dr. Riley and her amazing practice. I am almost done with my braces, and I am so excited to be able to smile with confidence. It is a life changing event for me, and I couldn't have done this for myself any other way. The professionalism and upbeat attitude of the entire staff is refreshing, and I look forward to visiting my girls (and Taylor) when I go in for my appointments! I can't imagine getting better service, with better people or better dentists. Jasper Dental will always have my business and my family's business. Thank you for being so great!- Christina Voyles. 5/22/2015
- I have not been to the dentist in several years so I was worried about going back. The staff were so understanding and explained everything to me and were very helpful. Dr Harmon was awesome, He took the extra time and explained everything to me let me ask questions. They set up a treatment plan for me and explained how much everything would cost and the whole insurance process. They did not push into doing anything I didn't want to. I will definitely go back and rec amen my friends, I had a great first visit.- Misty Sar. 10/6/2014
- I had my first appointment with Jasper Dental Associates this week. I can not say enough good things about every employee! Everyone was professional yet very easy going and so easy to talk to. I have a dentist office phobia and they all put me to ease, from Sarah to Cassi and Dr. Riley all were extremely nice. The only thing was that Cassi made me feel so old! I remember when she was born and now she has young ones of her own. My insurance was explained in detail as far as benefits, deductible and what I was to pay, my appointments were scheduled to work with my schedule and I didn't feel rushed in making them. What a wonderful experience! My dentist office phobia has now been laid to rest!! A big THANK YOU!!!!- Rhonda McArthur. 4/1/2013
- As a new patient to Jasper Dental Associates all of my experiences have been wonderful. I have never had to wait and all of the staff provides personalized one on one care. All of the staff is very knowledgeable and very experienced. All of the work that I needed done was explained to me very carefully and based in evidenced base medicine. I really appreciate that they do all of the billing with my insurance company so I do not have to do any paperwork. The cost to me was broken down in detail helping me to plan financially. I would recommend the practice to my family members and friends!!!- Ruth McLachlan. 3/30/2013
